I arrived in Sydney in 2009 with a Master of Information Technology, a Bachelor of Commerce in Banking Law, and several years of professional experience in insurance and financial services in India.
I was qualified. I was experienced. And I had absolutely no idea how any of it worked here.
Job applications became my full time job. I sent hundreds. I rewrote my resume until I could no longer see it. I went to interviews I thought had gone well and heard nothing back, and I could not work out what I was doing wrong.
What I was missing was cultural context. Nobody had told me, because the people around me had grown up here and it was invisible to them. It was invisible to me for a different reason. I did not know what I did not know.
Fifteen years and several senior roles later, I understand exactly what was happening. And I see the same pattern in almost every skilled migrant who arrives here believing their qualifications will speak for themselves.
They will, eventually. But first there is a translation layer, and nobody hands it to you at the airport.
So I wrote it down.
The resources
These are free. There is no program to join and no list to sign up to. If they help, pass them on to someone who needs them.
The Australian job market is genuinely difficult for skilled migrants. That is not a reflection of your capability or your worth. It is a market with built-in advantages for people who already have local experience and local networks.
Most of the migrants I know who eventually broke through did it on the second or third attempt, not the first. They were not the ones who were never rejected. They were the ones who kept adjusting and kept showing up.
Your experience is real. It is hard. And it does not mean you are failing.
